Architectural and Interior Design
This unique lodge in Tanzania clings to the rim of the magnificent Ngorongoro Crater and is designed to blend completely into the landscape. Long and low, the lodge is built from local river stone, heavy timber beams and camouflaged with indigenous vines making it entirely invisible from the floor of the Crater 600 metres below.
Its 75 bedrooms take inspiration from the so-called ‘Cradle of Mankind’, prehistoric site of Olduvai Gorge and the early Engaruka settlements which nestled into the side of the Crater. The rooms have rock- enclosed balconies, uninterrupted views of the volcanic amphitheatre far below with interior themes and decoration reflecting the cave painting murals and bright geometric African design fabrics with rustic style furniture and fittings.
Linked by arched stone passages and timbered decks, its walls are decorated with stylized prehistoric cave paintings and lit by flaring torches.
