Speke Resort Convention Centre

Speke Resort Convention Centre, Uganda was commissioned to host the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit and G77 summit for January 2024. The development was sited within Speke Resort Munyonyo, an established five-star hotel, located strategically between the country's national airport and the capital city and this made it ideal for international conferences and engagements. The functions of the building are configured on four levels, i.e.; the lower ground floor hosting 8no. meeting rooms hosting upwards of 180pax each and a VIP lounge; the upper ground floor level with key areas for executive drop-off and arrival, pre-function, a 3600 pax main conference hall and main kitchen; the mezzanine floor level with areas for, translation booths, offices and general services; and the first floor level with areas for conference gallery, pre-function and a 1450-seater floating buffet restaurant. The proposed conference centre is adjoined to a new restaurant overseeing Lake Victoria that provides dining facilities and an outdoor ambience in resonance with the tropical climate of Uganda. The development is also placed between 2no. existing ballrooms thus creating an extensive seamless complex with multiple additional conferencing facilities and amenities. The natural stone, terracotta tones, and incorporation of water features and trees within its architecture blends into its immediate landscaped context, allowing one to experience Uganda’s lush flora and cultural experience. This experience is extended into the interiors with material references like back cloth and artwork displaying the natural terrains and beautiful national parks. The design intent also took into account precedence from the neighbouring structures within the resort in terms of form, orientation and materiality.
