It is with profound sadness that we mark the passing of Jon Anthony Cavanagh, Founder and one of the pioneering partners of Symbion. Jon passed away on the night of 8th June 2026, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy that has shaped the architectural, project management, and development landscape across Africa for more than four decades.
Born on 11th April 1951, Jon Anthony Cavanagh dedicated his life to excellence in architecture, project planning, and project management. A Kenyan national with a global outlook, he was fluent in English, French, and Kiswahili, enabling him to connect with diverse communities and professionals across the continent and beyond.
Jon’s academic journey laid the foundation for a distinguished professional career. He earned a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Architectural Studies from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne in 1972, followed by a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the same institution in 1976. His commitment to professional development and industry leadership was reflected through numerous prestigious memberships and fellowships. He became a Member of the Architectural Association of Kenya in 1981, a Member of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1983, a Member of the Architectural Association of Tanzania in 1995, and was honoured as a Fellow of the Architectural Association of Kenya (FAAK) in 2001.
He further expanded his expertise through membership in the Association for Project Management (APM), United Kingdom, in 2004 and served as a Technical Committee Member for SGS QUALICERT Service Certification Standards in 2007. In 2017 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Architectural Association of Kenya for his exemplary contribution to the built environment in Kenya.
In 1980, Jon became one of the founding partners of Symbion, helping establish an organization that would grow into one of East Africa’s most respected multidisciplinary consulting firms. Through his vision, integrity, and unwavering commitment to quality, he helped create a culture of excellence that continues to guide the company today.
Throughout his career, Jon successfully delivered a wide range of architectural and project management assignments in Kenya and across numerous countries including South Africa, Mozambique, Zambia, Uganda, Tanzania, Botswana, Seychelles, Nigeria, Rwanda, Ethiopia, and Somalia. His expertise spanned architecture, interior design, project planning, and project management. He worked across commercial, residential, industrial,hospitality, and leisure sectors. He particularly liked the hospitality and leisure sectors earning Symbion repeat
commissions from the Serena and Sarova groups of hotels.
Among his many notable achievements were his contributions to landmark projects such as Lillian Towers Nairobi, The Nairobi Serena Hotel, the Polana Serena Hotel in Maputo Mozambique, the Kampala Serena Hotel in Kampala, Uganda; Oshwal center in Westlands, Ngorongoro Serena Hotel, Mara Safari club, Sarova Shaba lodge in the Shaba National Reserve, and Mweya Safari Lodge in Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda. These projects stand as enduring symbols of his creativity, professionalism, and commitment to delivering world-class developments.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Jon (or JAC as he was known in the industry) was a mentor, leader, and inspiration to generations of architects. He believed in empowering people, nurturing talent, and creating opportunities for growth. His guidance and wisdom influenced countless careers and helped shape the future of the built environment across the region. Jon’s legacy extends far beyond the buildings he designed or the projects he managed. It lives on in the values he championed—integrity, innovation, excellence, and service. His vision established a strong foundation for Symbion and continues to inspire the organization’s mission and future aspirations.
